The new Learning Science Through Art water education program is a partnership between Yuba Water Agency and Yuba Sutter Arts, which teaches local students about the Yuba River through science and art projects.
Yuba Water Agency and Yuba-Sutter Arts have collaborated on this program to supplement the second and third grade curriculum at 23 Yuba County schools, to include more science and art-based projects that meet state education requirements, and ultimately bring further awareness about the environment and the Yuba River watershed.
The curriculum for third graders focuses on the species that live in the Yuba River Watershed. On the first day, scientists and river education experts teach the students about some of the interesting fish and wildlife that call the Yuba River home. On the second day, Yuba Sutter Arts teachers lead students through the creation of unique textile art projects of one of those species.
The second graders get a general understanding of the Yuba River watershed as an ecosystem, learning where the river flows, and all of the unique components that interact with the river on its journey to the sea. On the first day, Yuba Water Agency staff educate students about the watershed through an interactive program, and on the second day, the students are taught a fun song, dance about water.
Check out the video below for a step-by-step guide to learn the song and dance that is taught as part of the program and to see students at Yuba Feather Elementary School in action.
